There are a couple reasons you'd want to have links to your site. One, you can get visitors to your site. These links can be in articles, directories or search engines.

Two, the search engines will rank you more highly if you have good links coming into your site. To the search engines, an incoming link is a vote for your site. The more votes, the more relevant the search engines see your site.

Here are some thoughts when developing a linking program:

-Keep Organized

I like to keep an Excel spreadsheet of the sites that I've submitted to so I don't repeat myself in my submission. Plus is allows me to see the fruit of work when I look back on incoming links later so I know what directories are good to submit to.

-Backlinks won't Appear Instantaneously

Search engines will often comes through sites on a regular basis but that doesn't mean they'll immediately. It can take several months for Google or the other search engines to credit you with a backlink from these sites.

-Look for Sites that Have a High Google PageRank

If you have a Google Toolbar on your browser you can check the PageRank for the site you are considering submitting your site to. PageRank is a ranking that Google gives to sites based on how many pages are in the site, how many incoming links it has, the age of the domain name, and a variety of other factors. A link from a site that has a high PageRank will aid you in your link popularity.

-Use a Throw-Away Email Address for Submission

Don't use your normal email address for submitting or you will start getting tons of spam from these directories. You'll need to check this email address for confirmations but you don't want to have it go into your normal email box.

-Shoot for one-way Links

There is little value in getting links from a site and then have to send back a link to the same site. This is called a reciprocal link and the Link building Services can easily get you some really good quality links. Shoot for directories and sites where you don't have to give a link back to them.

-Stay Away from Sites that Have Tons of Links on Each Page

-Submitting to Free Directories

The first free directory you should submit to is DMOZ. It has been a source of listings for many other directories over the years. Once you've done this you can start looking around for other directories. One of my favorites is Strongest Links. It has a good list of paid and free directories and they update their list regularly.

-Submitting to Paid Directories

There is some value in submitting your site to paid directories. Some of these directories can be kind of expensive (Yahoo! charges $299 per year) while others can be $10 or $20 per year. Sometimes these directories can give you a good link back to your site, especially if the site is topically related to your site, which is a vertical directory.

-Free Listings on Sites Related to Your Site

You can find sites that ask that ask for linking. Often they will have links on their home page where they request linking. To find sites like this, go to Google and search for a keyword phrase related to your site and then include "add URL" or "add link" (using the quotation marks is important). Look at the listings on the search engine results page and start going through them to find the ones appropriate to your topic, and then fill out the link request.

-Linking from the Same Places as Your Competition

You can take a look at where your competitors are getting a link and then try to get links from the same web sites. You do this by typing link. It will give you a listing of where they are getting links. You can start visiting these sites to see if there is a way to get links, too. So, this would be a good start for you to get links back to your site. It takes time and there are some overseas companies that offer Link building Services. You might consider testing one or two of them to see how effective they are. Or you can hire a high school kid to come to your office to do is. In the long run, a good linking campaign will help boost your ranking and get your more visitors to your site.
